They open up the old MPEG-2 plastic box.
They completely remove the old green board (the motherboard) from inside.
They buy a new, standalone MPEG-4 motherboard from the market or online.
They put this new board inside the old plastic box and power it with a 12V adapter.
This is a fun and cheap DIY project, but remember: you aren't really updating the old box. You are just putting a brand-new machine inside an old plastic shell.
What is the best option for you?
If you want to watch MPEG-4 HD channels on DD Free Dish without any headaches, the best choice is to simply buy a brand-new MPEG-4 set-top box.
However, if you are on a very tight budget, you can easily buy one of those loose MPEG-4 motherboards. Look for one that has an LED display and remote sensor built right into it. Just plug it into a 12V power adapter, connect it to your TV, and it is ready to play your HD Free Dish channels!
